Balancing Act

The Faulkner Life Balance Map is a renowned method for achieving a more fulfilling, healthier, and happier life. John Faulkner's approach emphasizes the practice and integration of small changes across six key areas, or 'containers of life,' to create harmony: Mental, Physical, Emotional, Social, Spiritual, and Symbolic.

Mental: Engage in logical planning as well as creative activities. This involves using both the left (analytical) and right (creative) sides of your brain to keep your mind active and balanced.

Physical: Prioritize cardio exercise, healthy eating, and relaxation. Looking after your body is crucial for overall well-being, so ensure you are nourishing it with good food and regular movement.

Emotional: Understand and embrace your emotions. Recognizing that it is okay to feel a range of emotions and learning to handle them appropriately is key to emotional health.

Social: Build a sense of belonging to a group. Whether it's family, friends, or colleagues, having a social support network is essential for a balanced life.

Spiritual: Define your personal beliefs and values. This could relate to religion or a specific life philosophy that guides your sense of right and wrong.

Symbolic: Draw inspiration from meaningful stories and people. These are the things that motivate and inspire you to dream and achieve.

To rebalance your life, draw six containers on paper and label them according to Faulkner's map. Assess how full each is and focus on the least full to start rebalancing. For example, if your social life is lacking, join a group that aligns with your interests. By addressing one area, you can positively impact others, maintaining a balanced life. Repeat this exercise every six months to keep your life in balance.
